Jail or Bail: arrested for turning it off and on again

On Friday 16 February 2024, our founder Alex Harvey was arrested by a real (and very patient) police officer, led away in handcuffs and locked up at The Nook, the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices hospice just down the road from our office in Poringland. We could not be prouder.

The charge? Turning it off and on again.

Jail or Bail is one of EACH’s most entertaining fundraisers. Fifteen local business people were arrested, charged with suitably dreadful corporate crimes and held under arrest across EACH’s three hospices until they raised bail. Alex’s rap sheet read: “Asking people to turn their PC on and off”. Which, in fairness, is a crime he commits daily.

The magistrate set bail at £1,000, with every penny going straight to EACH via his JustGiving page.

Why EACH matters to us.

EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across East Anglia, and supports their families too: nurses, therapists, counsellors and chaplains, working at home and in their three hospices. The Nook is their Norfolk hospice, and it sits in the same village as Snap IT’s office. When your neighbours do work this important, you find a way to help, even if that way involves handcuffs.

Spending the day inside The Nook made the case better than any fundraising pitch could. It’s a genuinely extraordinary place, built around the children and families who need it.

The verdict: bail smashed.

Thanks to 39 donations from clients, friends, family and fellow Norfolk businesses, Alex raised £1,246 against his £1,000 bail, plus just over £180 in Gift Aid on top. Released without charge, and home in time for the weekend.

To everyone who chipped in: thank you. You can see every donation on the JustGiving page, which also has a link to give directly to EACH if you’d like to add to the total.

“Spending a day banged up at The Nook was the easiest sentence I’ll ever serve. The team there do extraordinary work, and raising a bit more than my bail for them was a privilege. Thank you to everyone who donated.” (Alex Harvey, CEO & Founder at Snap IT)

Help EACH keep doing what they do.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions, and support their families, at home and across their three hospices. Every pound genuinely counts.
